Newcastle Secures Yoane Wissa from Brentford
Newcastle United has officially acquired forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford in a transaction valued at £55 million. The signing was finalized on Deadline Day with just half a minute remaining before the window closed.
Throughout the summer, Newcastle had multiple offers for Wissa turned down, and the striker expressed his frustration on Instagram about the stalled transfer as he sought a move to their Premier League rivals. He will don the No. 9 jersey at Newcastle, previously worn by Alexander Isak, who completed a record transfer to Liverpool on Deadline Day.
The club had stated that Isak would only be sold if an appropriate replacement was found, and they have now signed both Nick Woltemade in a club-record deal and Wissa as additional forward options.
Brentford was open to negotiations with Newcastle regarding Wissa but insisted on receiving their asking price. Wissa expressed his excitement about joining Newcastle, stating on the official club website, “I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.”
Magpies manager Eddie Howe commented, “Yoane is a player we have had our eyes on for a while and we’re thrilled to have him. His Proven Premier League quality will add strength to our squad, and his style will resonate well with our supporters. He possesses pace, power, and a strong work ethic.”
Wissa’s Statement on His Departure from Brentford
Earlier, Wissa publicly voiced his desire to leave Brentford, stating he felt the club was unfairly preventing his move despite receiving several reasonable offers. He emphasized his commitment to Brentford and the importance of honoring prior discussions about allowing his transfer.
Wissa is grateful for the support from Brentford fans and expressed disappointment in having to navigate this challenging situation, urging the club’s management to uphold their promise to permit his departure as the transfer window neared its close.
Brentford has not publicly responded to Wissa’s statement, and as of now, there has been no verification of the written agreements he referenced.
