It’s always worth inquiring about the top players on opposing teams.
This holds especially true in the NBA, where there are a limited number of game-changers. For instance, when Dallas GM Nico Harrison reached out to Minnesota in mid-January regarding Anthony Edwards, it prompted a brief discussion about a star-for-star trade. However, this conversation quickly fizzled out when it became evident that the Timberwolves were uninterested, causing some confusion since any such deal would inevitably require the Mavericks to part with their star, Luka Dončić.
Weeks later, when Dallas decided to trade their five-time All-Star for Anthony Davis, along with Max Christie and a first-round draft pick, many were taken aback. However, Timberwolves officials were not surprised, as they had already seen hints of this trade months earlier.
Another significant insight from this exchange is the Timberwolves’ lack of consideration of swapping the promising 23-year-old Edwards for the then 25-year-old Dončić. This speaks volumes about their confidence in the potential of Edwards, and the leadership of president Tim Connelly, along with new owners Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore, appears to be validated as time goes on.
Edwards, now a contender for the title of “future face of the league,” has been outstanding in the playoffs. His remarkable 43-point, nine-rebound, and six-assist performance in Game 4 against the Lakers stood out, particularly compared to the previous year’s Western Finals where Dončić dominated the match-up. This year, however, it’s Edwards who is shining.
Edwards Statistics
Performance: 29.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.5 turnovers per game, with a team-high plus-28.
Shooting Accuracy: 45.2% overall from 23.3 attempts per game; 43.2% from three-point range; 82.6% from the free-throw line.
Dončić Statistics
Performance: 30.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 4.5 turnovers per game, with a minus-19 rating.
Shooting Accuracy: 46.5% overall from 21.5 attempts per game; 36.8% from three-point range; 93.5% from the free-throw line.
Beyond the statistics, Edwards has excelled in the intangible aspects of the game too. His elite defense and remarkable athleticism make him a fan favorite, contrasting sharply with Dončić’s performance. Edwards’ efforts have significantly contributed to transforming the Timberwolves into potential contenders for a deep playoff run.
