Yankees Question Verdugo’s Free Agency Status
TAMPA, Fla. — Several members of the New York Yankees are expressing curiosity over the fact that former teammate Alex Verdugo remains unsigned. Right fielder Aaron Judge remarked, “I am surprised. He’s such a great player and brings immense value and versatility to any team.”
Manager Aaron Boone shared his thoughts, saying, “I am a bit surprised because he is undoubtedly a big-league player and a starting-caliber player. It seems the right opportunity hasn’t aligned in terms of money and team needs, but he was fantastic for us.”
Starting pitcher Marcus Stroman also expressed his surprise, stating, “Yes, I am surprised. A lot of things in this game can be unexpected these days.” Verdugo’s agent, Dan Lozano from MVP Sports Group, has not commented on the situation.
Verdugo’s Recent Performance and Current Status
Last season, Verdugo earned $8.7 million, but sources indicate he hasn’t received any major-league offers since becoming a free agent. He is one of only two players from last year’s World Series Yankees roster still looking for a team, alongside first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who has expressed a desire to continue playing in 2025 but hesitates to accept what he views as an unfair contract.
Despite a down offensive season in 2024, Verdugo proved to be a steady defensive presence and an integral part of the Yankees’ clubhouse dynamic. In 149 games, he batted .233—significantly below his career average of .281—with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs.
Teammates Reflect on Verdugo’s Contributions
Teammates recalled Verdugo’s strong start to the season, having posted a .764 OPS in the first 58 games, before experiencing a decline to a .575 OPS in the final stretch. Although the Yankees considered starting their top prospect Jasson Domínguez over him later in the season, they relied on Verdugo’s consistent defense during playoff runs, even though he hit only .208 in 14 postseason games.
The Yankees acquired Verdugo last offseason from the Boston Red Sox amid rumors of tension between him and former manager Alex Cora, but his integration into the Yankees’ culture appeared seamless. Outfielder Trent Grisham highlighted their camaraderie, saying, “He was my lockermate from Day 1. I loved playing with him and appreciate his skills and personality.”
Looking Ahead
As the Yankees appear to have moved forward with plans for Domínguez to take over left field, they are also considering other roster changes while remaining cautious about increasing payroll. Yankees players fondly recalled Verdugo’s memorable plays, including a stunning catch during the World Series that showcased his commitment to the team.
Boone noted Verdugo’s potential to bounce back, stating, “I think he can really hit. There were some struggles during the season, but also a bit of bad luck. He had quality at-bats in the postseason, and I believe there is offensive upside yet to be realized.” Volpe, another teammate, mentioned that Verdugo is working hard in Arizona this offseason and remains optimistic about his future opportunities.
