Brennan Johnson’s Impact on Crystal Palace and Tottenham’s Regrets
Brennan Johnson may not have made a significant impact at Crystal Palace, but Tottenham Hotspur could have really benefited from his presence during the crucial end-of-season games.
Officials at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are likely regretting the decision to let Johnson go for minimal gain. The club lost millions after selling the 24-year-old winger to Crystal Palace at the beginning of the January transfer window, even though the move allowed for new signings.
After recuperating just £35 million from the original £47.5 million paid to Nottingham Forest, Spurs turned their attention to signing Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and Souza from Santos to cover recent injuries that hit the squad.
Earlier in the year, Rodrigo Bentancur underwent surgery for a hamstring issue, while Ben Davies sustained a broken ankle. The team had already fallen into the lower part of the Premier League standings due to previous injuries to key players.
To strengthen Thomas Frank’s squad during this time, Tottenham’s management hurriedly sought to offload players to raise funds, leading to Johnson’s sale.
Ironically, the staff who deemed Johnson was no longer needed at Tottenham are no longer with the club. Football.london reports that Frank and Fabio Paratici were the ones who informed Johnson on New Year’s Day that he was surplus to requirements.
Shortly after, Paratici departed for Fiorentina, with Frank being dismissed a month later, leaving current officials at Tottenham regretting their decision. While Johnson hasn’t been a standout performer at Selhurst Park, his skills could have been valuable for Spurs as they battle for survival in the Premier League.
