MELBOURNE, Australia
“I’ve been here 20 years. And this room is still the same!” Lewis Hamilton chuckled as he addressed reporters in the press room at Melbourne’s Albert Park, the venue for the Formula 1 2026 Australian Grand Prix.
It was at this same location in 2007 that a 22-year-old Hamilton made his F1 debut with McLaren, quickly impressing fans by overtaking his teammate and reigning world champion Fernando Alonso right at the start.
While the room hasn’t changed, Hamilton—now 41 and starting his 20th F1 season—has undergone significant transformation. He has emerged as a seven-time world champion and has claimed 104 grand prix victories, solidifying his place as the sport’s most accomplished driver. Hamilton led Mercedes through a period of dominance from 2014 to 2021, before making a high-profile switch to Ferrari last season.
However, this past winter was a period of introspection for Hamilton after a disappointing first season with Ferrari. “Rediscovering myself was a big part of it,” he reflected, acknowledging that he had briefly lost touch with his identity. He indicated that the version of himself he once knew is gone for good.
Hamilton’s admission of vulnerability is unusual for elite athletes, particularly someone who has reached the pinnacle of success. His struggles during the challenging 2025 season with Ferrari—a year he termed a “nightmare”—marked a significant low, as it was the first time in his F1 career that he finished without a podium finish. By the end of that season, he was in desperate need of a rest.
Hamilton found rejuvenation during the offseason, sharing glimpses of snowy retreats and quality time with family on social media. He also attended the Super Bowl with Kim Kardashian, an aspect of his personal life he preferred to keep private. Despite taking time for relaxation, he maintained vigorous training in preparation for the upcoming season.
As he gears up for 2026, a sense of renewal envelops Hamilton. The new car designs resonate more with his driving style, being lighter and more enjoyable compared to the previous models that posed challenges for him. Recent preseason testing showed Ferrari’s potential, further fueling hopes of returning to competitive form alongside his teammate, Charles Leclerc. “We’ve got great mileage done in winter testing,” said Hamilton, expressing optimism about the team’s progress and his personal readiness for the season ahead.
