Social Media Showdown: Boxing’s Potential 2026 Fight of the Year
Boxing may have already secured its fight of the year for 2026, not in the ring but on social media between Luke Thomas and Mike Coppinger.
Luke Thomas has been a prominent figure in combat sports media for two decades, contributing to outlets like Bloody Elbow, CBS Sports, and his Morning Kombat podcast. Mike Coppinger has extensive experience in the field as well, having worked at Fox Sports and ESPN before moving to The Ring Magazine and DAZN in 2025.
In 2024, The Ring magazine became part of a sportswashing campaign by Saudi Arabia when it was acquired by Turki Alalshikh, the Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority. Alalshikh is also a co-founder of Zuffa Boxing, working alongside Dana White.
The boxing industry has long been marred by conflicts of interest, and the situation with a major promoter also controlling a prominent publication is glaringly evident. A recent incident involved veteran promoter Frank Warren threatening a $1 billion lawsuit against Zuffa and a Saudi entertainment firm for breach of contract, followed by The Ring posting unverified claims about Warren’s financial struggles, which Thomas criticized as blatant propaganda.

Recently, Thomas targeted The Ring again, prompting Coppinger to defend his employer by claiming no one takes Thomas seriously. This exchange escalated, with Thomas launching a heated video response, reminiscent of Stephen A. Smith’s infamous rants.

In his fiery tirade, Thomas accused Coppinger of lacking talent and integrity, suggesting his positions are due to sycophancy rather than merit. He labeled Coppinger as a symbol of the failures in sports journalism, arguing that his work serves a regime complicit in serious human rights violations.
As Saudi Arabia’s influence in sports continues to expand, the involvement of journalists and organizations like The Ring in their narrative reflects a broader ethical dilemma. Thomas’s confrontational style brings attention to this uncomfortable alliance, highlighting the implications of working for a regime with a controversial history.
