Tesla has officially introduced a tow package for the updated 2024+ Model 3 in North America, marking its first availability in this region after previously being offered in Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Until now, Model 3 owners relied on third-party hitch solutions that lacked official support for Tesla’s Tow Mode and risked voiding warranties.
Tow Package Features
The new tow package includes a robust steel tow bar equipped with a standard 2” receiver and 7-pin connector. It also allows the use of Tow Mode, complemented by a full trailer harness as part of the package.
According to Tesla, this hitch can support up to 2,200 lbs (998 kg) of towing capacity, which is less than the Model Y, S, and X, which can tow up to 3,500 lbs (1,587 kg). Owners will need a 2” hitch and a compatible ball. The receiver conveniently folds beneath a cover secured with two plastic bolts, consistent with other Tesla models.
The Model 3 Tow Package is available for $1,300 USD or $1,765 CAD via the Tesla store or app. The installation price is included, with parts shipped directly to the nearest Tesla service center and installed there, although it may take one to two weeks for delivery.
It’s important to note that this package is only suitable for the 2024+ Model 3 RWD and AWD variants; the Performance model is excluded likely due to the size of its larger rear motor.
Installation Details
The total cost encompasses shipping to the local Tesla Service Center, where configuration changes to enable Tow Mode will be implemented. Installation time usually ranges from 2 to 4 hours, depending on whether additional harness wiring is necessary for certain Model 3s.
Overall, it’s great to see Tesla finally integrating this feature for North American Model 3 owners, enabling them to tow light loads while maintaining their vehicle’s warranty and utilizing the benefits of Tow Mode.
