Carlos Alcaraz Advances to Semi-Finals
Carlos Alcaraz moved into the semi-finals of the French Open after a convincing straight-sets victory over Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
The 22-year-old defending champion delivered his best performance of the tournament thus far, defeating the American 12th seed with scores of 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. This win sets him up for a semi-final clash against Lorenzo Musetti as he aims to reach the final for a second consecutive year.
Pressures of Professional Tennis
While Alcaraz aspires to increase his tally of four Grand Slam titles—having already won Wimbledon twice, the US Open, and Roland Garros—he has recently expressed feelings of being overwhelmed by the sport. This admission has led to calls from some, including tennis expert Toni Nadal, for him to consider leaving tennis.
In a new Netflix documentary showcasing his life off the court, Alcaraz openly discussed his fears of viewing tennis as an obligation. He described moments of feeling “enslaved to the sport” and experiencing significant anxiety and frustration.
Finding a Balance
Alcaraz also emphasized the importance of maintaining a work-life balance. He mentioned partying in Ibiza with a friend shortly before defending his Wimbledon title, stating, “In Ibiza, I’m not going to lie, it’s pretty much all about partying.” His comments reflect a desire to let off steam amid a demanding career.
Toni Nadal responded to Alcaraz’s feelings, suggesting if the pressures of tennis are too great for him, he should consider stepping away from the game. He asserted that while he understands athletes face sacrifices, the challenges should be approached as choices rather than burdens.
Alcaraz’s Relationship Status
Amid his busy schedule, Alcaraz also highlighted the difficulties of finding a long-term partner, acknowledging that it can be challenging for a tennis player to connect with someone due to constant travel. He confirmed his single status on the Molusco TV podcast, stating, “It can be difficult for a tennis player to meet the right person.” He is open to the possibility of romance but recognizes the complexities involved in maintaining a relationship under such circumstances.
