Intense Strikes on Kharkiv
In the early hours of Saturday, Russia launched significant attacks on Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, resulting in at least three fatalities, according to the city’s mayor. This strike occurred just a day after one of the most extensive aerial assaults by Moscow on Ukraine.
Retaliation for Drone Attacks
Recent Russian bombings are seen as a response to a daring drone operation by Ukraine, which impacted more than 33% of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers. In the span of recent days, military actions by Russia have intensified.
Explosions and Casualties
Mayor Igor Terekhov reported that Kharkiv, located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Russia’s border, was struck by “at least 40 explosions.” He labeled the recent attacks as the most powerful since the escalation of war, describing the situation as sheer terror against civilians.
Continued Assaults and Outcomes
Following an initial wave of attacks, Russia resumed its offensive later that evening, utilizing glide bombs, which resulted in additional casualties. Terekhov noted that a children’s playground became a target in the subsequent strike, illustrating the indiscriminate nature of the assaults.
International Reactions
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as “pure terrorism,” emphasizing the senselessness of targeting civilians, particularly in a public space. He called for stronger actions against Russia to compel a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Ongoing Military Actions and Prisoner Negotiations
Amid the violence, Ukrainian and Russian officials have had discussions regarding prisoner exchanges, although Russia has accused Ukraine of delaying these exchanges indefinitely. In a recent escalation, Ukraine’s air force claimed to have downed a Russian fighter jet.
