Old Post by Rahul Gandhi Supporting Cricketer Virat Kohli Resurfaces Amid Calls for Arrest After Bengaluru Tragedy
Rahul Gandhi’s 2021 message supporting Virat Kohli has gained attention as discussions surge around arresting Kohli.
Virat Kohli has been in the spotlight after the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team he has been part of since the IPL’s inception, won their first title in 18 years during the recent Indian Premier League season. This victory was significant for Kohli, who remained steadfast and loyal to the team despite facing criticism over the years. Shortly after the team’s victory, tragedy struck when a crowd gathered at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for a celebration turned into a deadly stampede, resulting in 11 fatalities.
The unfortunate incident, occurring on June 4, has sparked nationwide outrage, with increasing calls for Kohli’s arrest. In this context, a four-year-old post by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has resurfaced.
#ArrestKohli
A trending hashtag on social media, #ArrestKohli, reflects a rapid shift in public sentiment from celebrating Kohli to blaming him within just 36 hours. As the public demanded accountability for the lives lost, reports emerged indicating that authorities had advised postponing the celebrations, a suggestion that was reportedly overlooked by the Royal Challengers Bangalore and local officials.
A senior officer commented, “We attempted to discourage the event from going forward, but the frenzy was uncontrollable. Our personnel were exhausted from the prolonged celebrations.”
Rahul Gandhi’s Message
Following the tragedy, Kohli faced severe backlash, with rumors claiming he was “escaping to London.” Amidst the hostility directed at him, supporters began to share Rahul Gandhi’s 2021 post that offered encouragement to Kohli. The message read, “Dear Virat, these people are filled with hate because they receive no love. Forgive them. Support the team.”
Kohli faced criticism in 2021 following India’s disappointing performances in the World Cup. After a loss to Pakistan and another to New Zealand, he stood by his teammate Mohammed Shami, who was targeted over his religion, condemning the “spineless trolls” for their actions.
Arrests Made
In connection to the stampede, six individuals have been arrested, including RCB management member Nikhil Sosale and Sunil Mathew from an event management company. Additionally, two employees from the Karnataka State Cricket Association were also taken into custody.
