DUNMORE — A Successful Return for Cahir Gormley
Cahir Gormley, hailing from Maydown, Northern Ireland, marked a successful return to Northeast Pennsylvania with his second victory in the area. He secured a points win against Demetress Wilson at the Gloves and Glory Flag Day Showdown, held at the Holiday Inn Scranton East on June 14, in front of a crowd of 500.
Gormley had previously won during his first visit in November 2024. In the opening round of the recent match, he effectively landed punches and retreated before Wilson could retaliate, hitting a solid straight right followed by a body shot mid-round.
Wilson, representing Buffalo, New York, in the National Golden Gloves tournament, came out strong in the second round, landing a good right jab and a hard shot to the body. However, Gormley managed to avoid a powerful punch and countered with a left hook to the body.
“He was a tough opponent,” Gormley stated. “As an elite-level boxer, I seek out high-level competition to prove my capabilities. I started well but had to manage his aggressive approach in the second round.”
In the third round, Wilson continued to press forward, leading to a series of exchanges. Gormley successfully defended a punch and countered with a straight right, ending the round with a notable left hook. “My adaptability and defensive skills helped me win,” he explained. “I’m dedicated to my training, and this is just the beginning for me.”
Calm Under Pressure
James Cortese, also from the Irish Boxing Club in Scranton, maintained composure against the aggressive style of Nasheem Woodard. Despite being pushed across the ring and both fighters falling to the canvas, Cortese controlled the fight and emerged victorious by points.
“I need to utilize my jab more effectively,” Cortese reflected. “While he was telegraphing his punches, I was too. My body shots seemed to connect well, but overall, I need to improve.” Cortese scored several effective punches throughout the match while reminding himself to stay relaxed and composed.
Upcoming Professional Card Announced
During the event, promoter Doug Long revealed plans for a professional boxing card on July 26 at the Holiday Inn Scranton East, marking his return to the professional scene since 2019.
The event will feature Dunmore native Rocco Cordaro, who has fought solely in Colombia since turning professional. “It feels surreal,” Cordaro shared. “I’m grateful for this opportunity and eagerly anticipate showcasing my talent in my hometown.” With a professional record of 5-0 and four knockouts, Cordaro looks forward to his upcoming fight.
