Accusations Against Tyler Perry
Tyler Perry faces allegations in a civil lawsuit claiming he repeatedly sexually assaulted and harassed actor Derek Dixon on the set of “The Oval,” a series he created. The lawsuit, filed on Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, asserts that Perry exploited his industry influence to silence Dixon until now.
Perry’s Legal Representation Responds
Matthew Boyd, Perry’s attorney, denied the allegations in a statement to CBS News, asserting, “This is an individual who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than setting up a scam. Tyler will not be shaken down, and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.”
Dixon’s Role in “The Oval”
Dixon appeared in 85 episodes of “The Oval,” which has aired for six seasons on BET. His latest appearances were in the show’s current season. The lawsuit seeks damages of at least $260 million.
Nature of the Allegations
The lawsuit claims that Perry used his power to create a coercive, sexually exploitative environment. It details how Perry allegedly promised Dixon career opportunities, only to subject him to escalating sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation when Dixon rejected his advances.
Details of the Encounters
The complaint states that Perry first met Dixon in 2019 during a Perry event, and later invited him to audition. After initially appearing in “Ruthless,” Dixon landed a larger role in “The Oval.” The lawsuit alleges Perry began sending Dixon unsolicited sexual texts and that the harassment intensified as Perry offered Dixon more prominent roles.
Allegations of Assault
Dixon claims Perry sexually assaulted him multiple times, including incidents where Perry allegedly forcibly removed Dixon’s clothing and groped him despite Dixon’s clear refusals. The lawsuit notes that Perry later apologized and offered to help Dixon with a TV pilot, which the complaint contends was an attempt to keep him silent.
Aftermath and Further Complaints
Dixon reportedly moved to Los Angeles to distance himself from Perry, but the harassment continued. He filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2024 and ultimately left the show when his concerns were not addressed. As CBS News and The Associated Press traditionally do not identify alleged victims of sexual abuse, Dixon’s identification comes only because he has spoken publicly about his experience.
