Andy Howe and Steve Nickson have been appointed as interim leaders for first-team recruitment at Newcastle United, as the club seeks to hire a new sporting director for the third time in less than a year.
Howe, who is Newcastle’s assistant head of recruitment and nephew to head coach Eddie Howe, has been assigned the task of leading the search for new players alongside Nickson, following Paul Mitchell’s departure on June 30.
Although Mitchell will continue to support the club until that date, agents and clubs are now being directed to communicate with Andy Howe, with Nickson contributing significantly due to his extensive experience. This new arrangement was largely formalized on Tuesday.
How is Newcastle Managing Mitchell’s Replacement?
Newcastle is addressing both short- and long-term strategies regarding the sporting director role. Excel Search & Advisory, previously known as Nolan Partners, is spearheading the recruitment process, having previously assisted with Dan Ashworth’s and Peter Silverstone’s hiring.
While Ashworth focused on club-building, enhancing departmental connectivity and vision, Mitchell was responsible primarily for recruitment, as noted by Newcastle’s outgoing CEO Darren Eales. Consequently, Newcastle is looking for a candidate who can manage football operations effectively.
What Qualities Are They Seeking in a Candidate?
The club aims to find a ‘club builder’ akin to Ashworth, someone capable of fostering departmental ties and planning for the future. Given the club’s stature, it is unlikely they will consider inexperienced candidates; the new appointee needs to have an immediate impact.
Newcastle is also keen on retaining a strong relationship with the head coach, especially in light of the early tension between Howe and Mitchell. Ideally, the new hire would have experience with clubs participating regularly in European competitions.
Who Is Being Considered for the Role?
While Newcastle officials claim no leading candidate has yet emerged, reports indicate that Ross Wilson, Nottingham Forest’s chief football officer, is a strong contender. Wilson brings extensive experience from previous roles and has a positive rapport with Howe.
Other names under consideration include Julian Ward from Fenway Sports Group, Jason Ayto, and Gavin Fleig, suggesting a preference for an external candidate given the magnitude of the role.
Role Responsibilities and Future Adjustments
The sporting director’s role encompasses not just player recruitment, but oversight of all football-related departments. The next appointment will need to implement a sustainable trading model, ensure compliance with Premier League financial regulations, and enhance the club’s training facilities.
Decisions regarding this appointment will ultimately be approved by Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the chairman, while input from the board and potentially a newly appointed CEO may also influence the process. Head coach Eddie Howe is expected to be kept in the loop regarding developments.
