Recent Escalation Between Israel and Iran
On Friday, Israel conducted extensive air strikes on Iran, leading to a missile retaliation from Tehran.
Netanyahu’s Message
In a video message that day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Iranian populace, stating that Israel aims not only to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions but also to “clear the path for you to achieve your freedom.”
Opposition Divisions
While some factions of Iran’s fragmented opposition support Netanyahu’s appeal, others express skepticism regarding his true motives. Within Iran, official opposition groups are virtually nonexistent due to stringent government crackdowns on dissent, which have included mass executions and imprisonments since the 1980s.
Challenges for Communication
Journalists face increasing challenges in contacting individuals in Iran, given the government’s restrictions on internet and social media. Nevertheless, some young Iranians, who have protested previously, shared their thoughts, albeit with their names changed for safety due to fears of imprisonment.
Voices from Iran
Tara, a 26-year-old, remarked that during Israeli evacuation warnings, authorities often cut off internet access to prevent the public from receiving information, potentially increasing casualties. She criticized the regime for deliberately creating traffic to keep people in dangerous areas. Similarly, Sima, 27, expressed a wish for Israel to expedite its operations, feeling exhausted by the ongoing situation.
Support for Israeli Actions
Some individuals we spoke to voiced strong support for Israel’s strikes. Amir, 23, claimed unwavering support, asserting that no one else seems willing to confront the regime, expressing joy at the thought of those who have oppressed them finally feeling fear.
Diverse Perspectives on Freedom
However, skepticism remains among some opposition members regarding Netanyahu’s intentions. Activists like Navid, 25, worry that the conflict could result in more destruction without achieving regime change. Others, such as Mina, 27, emphasize that they desire the regime’s downfall, but not through violence, criticizing the notion that Israel could be a savior in this context.
