Haas Celebrates Milestone at Canadian Grand Prix
During the Canadian Grand Prix, Haas commemorated its 200th race by showcasing a version of its original 2016 livery. This nostalgic gesture highlighted the resilience of F1’s newest team, which faced considerable challenges, including the threat of closure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The team transitioned from a difficult position at the back of the grid, represented by Uralkali colors and drivers Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher in 2021, to a more competitive standing under team principal Ayao Komatsu. Now, they find themselves in a healthier position on the grid.
Despite finishing last in 2023, the American team has emerged as a midfield contender in 2024, recently securing sixth place in the constructors’ standings with a new driver lineup this season.
Komatsu expressed his pride in the team, recalling the initial excitement of their first race in 2016, where finishing P6 was a significant achievement. However, he also reflected on the low points, particularly in 2019 when the team struggled to perform consistently and faced further challenges due to the pandemic.
Haas’s performance remains inconsistent, influenced by issues with car balance and a highly competitive midfield. The current drivers, Esteban Ocon and rookie Oliver Bearman, have collectively earned seven points-scoring finishes, showcasing their potential amidst these challenges.
Komatsu, promoted to team principal last year, is focused on fostering a transparent culture and retaining talent in a highly competitive environment. He acknowledges that the new two-story motorhome is a part of creating a more appealing workplace for current and prospective staff.
As they navigate the competitive landscape, Haas aims to strengthen its team dynamics while pushing for performance improvements. Ocon emphasized the importance of capitalizing on available opportunities, reminding everyone that the competition is fiercer than ever. The recent resurgence of Haas under Komatsu’s leadership marks a hopeful turnaround for the team, reminding fans of their past struggles and current ambitions.
