Tyrese Haliburton Injured in Game 7
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Indiana Pacers’ aspirations for the 2025 NBA championship were significantly dependent on the health of guard Tyrese Haliburton’s right calf. Unfortunately, that dependency proved too great as Haliburton’s calf collapsed five minutes into the first quarter of Game 7 of the Finals on Sunday night.
Pacers’ Struggles After Injury
The game was tied at 16-16 when Haliburton went down, and the Pacers subsequently faced a crushing 87-75 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder, finishing 103-91. This victory marked the Thunder’s first NBA championship in the 27 years since the franchise moved to its current city, while the Pacers were still in search of their first title since joining the NBA.
Injury During a Strong Start
Haliburton began the game strongly, hitting three 3-pointers and showing composure against his opponent, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. However, disaster struck as he landed awkwardly, immediately realizing the severity of his condition. The guard was emotional, slapping the floor in despair as he was supported by teammates, and Gilgeous-Alexander showed concern for his rival.
Coaches and Teammates React
“When Tyrese went down, it felt like a punch to the gut for all of us,” said Indiana coach Rick Carlisle. “I believe he will recover fully, although I don’t have any updates on his condition.” Gilgeous-Alexander expressed empathy, noting it was heartbreaking to witness such an injury in a crucial game.
Concerns Over Injury Severity
Post-injury, Haliburton was taken to the locker room without bearing weight on his leg. Initially termed a “right leg injury,” there were concerns about the possibility of a torn Achilles tendon following an MRI. This would add to the unfortunate occurrence of similar injuries earlier in the playoffs.
Impact on the Game
While the injury certainly impacted the Pacers, they managed to lead at halftime 48-47. However, as the second half progressed, the lack of Haliburton proved too challenging, and the Thunder pulled away, eventually securing the win. Haliburton supported his teammates from the sidelines, embodying his dedication even while injured.
A Unifying Presence
Backup point guard T.J. McConnell emphasized Haliburton’s character, stating, “His selflessness and constant encouragement for us, even while unable to play, showcase what kind of person he is.” Despite the disappointing outcome, Haliburton’s spirit inspired his teammates throughout the contest.
