The 2025 MLB trade deadline is approaching, with just over a month to go before July 31, and teams are starting to clarify their positions as buyers or sellers.
This week’s discussion features FOX Sports MLB reporters Rowan Kavner and Deesha Thosar, focusing on a team that might sell its talent and the impressive season being delivered by Cal Raleigh.
1. The Twins’ Struggles and Byron Buxton
Currently, the Twins are once again under .500, having been outscored this season and holding a 1-9 record in their last ten games. Should they consider trading Byron Buxton?
Kavner: Not quite yet. Buxton, who has a no-trade clause and is thriving with a contract of just $15 million per year through 2028, doesn’t seem keen to leave. The Twins are just a few games away from a wild-card spot. Instead of dealing Buxton, they should explore trades for other players like Willi Castro or Harrison Bader while hoping Carlos Correa heats up in the second half.
2. Elly De La Cruz’s Comeback
Kavner: I’m optimistic about Elly De La Cruz. His performance has improved, dropping his strikeout rate significantly recently. For him to be regarded as a star, he must maintain this success for the rest of the season.
Thosar: It’s great to witness De La Cruz emerging, especially as he’s contributing significantly to the Reds’ offense. Nevertheless, he must deliver consistently to avoid heightened scrutiny during potential slumps. A more balanced lineup could relieve some of the pressure on him.
3. Possible Trade Candidates
Kavner: The Marlins should act quickly if they receive a good offer for pitchers like Sandy Alcantara. Looking ahead, the Orioles should also consider becoming sellers now that injuries have impacted their season, examining offers for players like Cedric Mullins.
4. Baltimore’s Playoff Prospects
Kavner: Despite a recent uptick in performance, I’m skeptical about the Orioles. Their pitching staff is unreliable, and overall, they are statistically unlikely to make the playoffs this year.
Thosar: However, acquiring an ace like Alcantara could benefit the Orioles’ future. While unlikely to contend for a World Series this year, adding smart pieces might just help them break through eventually.
5. Cal Raleigh’s Historic Season
As of now, every home run that Cal Raleigh hits extends the record for all-time homers by a switch-hitting catcher before the All-Star Game. Could he surpass the single-season home run record for catchers?
Kavner: Absolutely. Raleigh seems poised to hit well over 50 home runs this season, which would be unprecedented for a catcher. His performance in the second half of past seasons shows he can keep up this level of play.
Thosar: I agree. As long as Raleigh stays healthy, his momentum seems unstoppable, although participating in the Home Run Derby could affect that. Nonetheless, his current form makes it unlikely he will fall short of breaking the record.
