Coaches on the Hot Seat: A Countdown
During Thursday’s episode of #PFTPM, I was asked for a rundown of coaches who might be in jeopardy. I began listing names but decided to ponder the matter further and save it for Friday’s show. Almost forgot to revisit it!
While preparing for Friday, I crafted a list of five coaches and ranked them. Although I could have just directed you to the attached video, that’s not my style. I aim to provide enough context for a complete post.
Here’s my personal take, ranked from No. 5 to No. 1, highlighting coaches facing uncertainty as the season begins.
5. Panthers Coach Dave Canales
There’s an optimistic atmosphere around the Panthers after a strong finish in 2024, following a rocky start. If that momentum carries into 2025, things might go well for Canales in his third year. However, if the team struggles, his job could be at risk, especially under the scrutiny of owner David Tepper, who is known for his high standards and quick decisions.
4. Cowboys Coach Brian Schottenheimer
Schottenheimer’s job stability hinges on the nature of any guaranteed money in his contract beyond 2025. His hiring was unconventional, as he was not a favored choice during the last hiring cycle. The Cowboys opted for him to maintain continuity for quarterback Dak Prescott, likely due to cost considerations. If Schottenheimer’s contract doesn’t include a buyout option, he will need to perform well in 2025 to secure his position for 2026.
3. Colts Coach Shane Steichen
Steichen sits at a 17-17 record over two seasons without any playoff appearances, a concerning comparison to his predecessor. The ongoing struggles with quarterback Anthony Richardson reflect poorly on him. After a recent ownership transition, it remains uncertain how Carlie Irsay-Gordon will approach team management. Steichen’s success in 2025 is crucial to solidify his future with the Colts.
2. Giants Coach Brian Daboll
Giants co-owner John Mara has expressed mixed messages about Daboll’s future, indicating a lack of patience. This places Daboll in a precarious position heading into the season. Although the Giants inhabit a challenging division and need to bolster their roster, the recurring sentiment of uncertainty could hamper Daboll’s long-term prospects.
1. Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel
Despite all teams starting anew, the Dolphins seem to be in turmoil, with issues surrounding key players that could impact their success in 2025. Tua Tagovailoa’s ability to stay healthy and perform is critical for the team. If the Dolphins struggle to make the playoffs again, owner Stephen Ross may demand significant changes, underscoring the high stakes as the season unfolds.
The attached video discusses additional coaches who didn’t make the top five. I’ll let that speak for itself as this post reaches sufficient length.
