The summer transfer window for MLS is approaching, and discussions for player transfers are intensifying.
GIVEMESPORT’s MLS insider, Tom Bogert, provides the latest updates.
Red Bulls Engage in Talks for Werner and Berggren
The New York Red Bulls are actively negotiating to acquire German forward Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, according to sources from GIVEMESPORT. In addition, they are pursuing other summer signings.
RBNY is in advanced discussions to bring in Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren from the Polish team Raków, as reported by Kacper Tomczyk.
Berggren, 27, is a defensive midfielder set to join a midfield that recently lost Felipe Carballo, who is returning to Gremio following the expiration of his loan.
With a history of playing in Sweden before moving to Poland in 2022, Berggren has made 105 appearances for Raków and was previously with Hacken, helping both clubs secure league titles.
The primary focus remains on Werner, who would join Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as RBNY’s third designated player. Ongoing discussions aim to secure the former Germany international.
Last season, RBNY made a memorable playoff run, reaching the MLS Cup but ultimately losing to the LA Galaxy. Currently, they are in seventh place in the highly competitive Eastern Conference with 29 points, just five points separating ninth and fifth places.
Crew Negotiating to Retain Andres Herrera
The Columbus Crew are working on retaining wingback Andres Herrera after his loan from River Plate has ended, as per sources from GIVEMESPORT.
Negotiations are ongoing for a new agreement between the Crew and River Plate. If a deal is finalized, Herrera will be able to play despite the transfer window being closed, since his International Transfer Certificate remains in the U.S.
At 26, Herrera has become a regular contributor in the squad under Wilfried Nancy, having made 11 appearances this season, with three starts in the last five matches.
Columbus is also close to signing Hugo Picard from EA Guingamp under a U-22 initiative deal, and they still have an open designated player spot available this summer.
St. Louis Makes Bid for Young Center Back
St. Louis City has submitted a bid for Serbian youth international center back Vojin Serafimovic from FK Cukaricki, sources inform GIVEMESPORT.
At just 19, Serafimovic has already made 43 first-team appearances. He was recently part of Serbia’s U-21 national squad.
St. Louis currently sits second-to-last in the Western Conference with 15 points after 20 matches, trailing the playoff line by 11 points. The club recently parted ways with manager Olof Mellberg.
Colorado Seeking a Center Back
Following a failed deal for Israeli center back Stav Lemkin, the Colorado Rapids continue to seek a new center back to enhance their defensive lineup, sources say.
The Rapids had initially reached an agreement for Lemkin, but last-minute interest from FC Twente diverted the player’s attention. The club is exploring additional options to strengthen their defense.
The MLS summer transfer window opens on July 24, and the Rapids are expected to be active in pursuing new players.
Portsmouth Interested in Griffin Yow
Portsmouth, from the English Championship, is pursuing American winger Griffin Yow, according to sources from GIVEMESPORT.
While no official bid has been made, discussions have taken place between Portsmouth and Yow’s representatives regarding a possible transfer.
Yow is anticipated to part ways with Westerlo this summer, with his contract set to expire in a year. D.C. United holds a 35% sell-on clause for Yow, who came through their academy before moving to Westerlo.
This year, the 22-year-old recorded eight goals and three assists in over 2,000 minutes of play in Belgium.
