The Journey of Sam Clercx and His BMW Boxer Bobber
Although you may not have heard of Sam Clercx, his craftsmanship speaks for itself. Starting his journey at just 15 years old, Sam interned at Ironwood Motorcycles, mentored by Arjan van den Boom. His contributions are evident in many impressive bikes featured on our site, showcasing the skills he gained, particularly exemplified by his stunning BMW boxer bobber.
A Student of Craft
Reflecting on his early days, Sam recalls, “I was there with Arjan when he created the Mutant and many BMWs that established Ironwood’s reputation. It was an exhilarating experience, especially as most of my peers worked retail while I helped craft these remarkable custom bikes.”
Building His Dream
Despite challenges related to classic motorcycles, Sam maintained a passion for the iconic BMW boxer motor. He tackled a 1979 BMW R65, which he acquired as a disassembled project while doing another internship at Motoism in Munich.
Smart Modifications
Notably, the R100 engine, which produces significantly more horsepower than the R65, became Sam’s target for upgrades. He enhanced the engine with R100 cylinders and pistons and added custom touches, such as BMW R100RS badges and pod filters. Instead of the standard airbox, he used a 3D-printed cover designed to accommodate a NOCO NLP9 battery.
A Unique Aesthetic
Sam’s build also included front-end upgrades from the R100RS, improved braking with Brembo components, and a custom subframe supporting the rear. He worked to ensure that aesthetics did not compromise functionality, crafting a two-seater with a comfortable, waterproof seat by Tom Hurley, and installing modern LED lights for enhanced nighttime visibility.
Final Touches and Future Plans
To complete his bobber, Sam integrated modern and classic elements, such as a 3D-printed headlight fairing with integrated turn signals from Motoism. Having designed an eye-catching two-into-one exhaust for the bike, his meticulous attention to detail culminated in a sleek, striking motorcycle embodying both style and performance. With his project nearing completion, Sam plans to showcase the bike at Utrecht School of the Arts before setting off on new adventures.
Conclusion
With a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation, Sam Clercx delivers a memorable BMW bobber project that not only reflects his skills but also promises thrilling rides ahead.
