Closure of Golf Courses in Singapore by 2035
Four golf courses will be permanently shut down by 2035 to make room for other developments like housing, resulting in a total of 12 courses in Singapore by that time.
The Ministry of Law (MinLaw) announced on July 7 that the leases for Mandai Executive Golf Course, Warren Golf and Country Club, Orchid Country Club, and the Garden Course at Tanah Merah Country Club will not be renewed as these lands are required for future use.
This decision is part of a broader trend of repurposing golf course land for various uses. For instance, the Marina Bay Golf Course closed in June 2024, with its land being partially used for the Bay East Garden currently under construction.
Additionally, the leases for two other courses—the Singapore Island Country Club’s Bukit Course and Keppel Club’s Sime Course—will end on December 31, 2030. These sites will be made available for public use, which will include at least one public 18-hole golf course.
MinLaw has indicated that a section of the land from the Bukit (56ha) and Sime (61ha) courses might be allocated to the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) for its members once Orchid Country Club’s lease expires.
The first of the four courses slated for closure is the public Mandai Executive Golf Course, a nine-hole facility that will close after its lease expires on December 31, 2026. This land will be utilized by the Ministry of Education to create an Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre, one of three planned campsites to be established by 2032.
As a result of these closures, Singapore will only have 12 remaining golf courses by 2035, including the current Bukit and Sime courses. The government is evaluating the allocation of golf course land to accommodate changing demands for space, focusing on pressing national needs.
