Grigor Dimitrov’s Emotional Exit from Wimbledon
Grigor Dimitrov was visibly upset as he departed from Wimbledon.
The Bulgarian tennis star’s attempt to challenge world No. 1 Jannik Sinner ended in heartbreak during the third set of their Round of 16 match when he had to retire due to a right pectoral muscle injury.
Dimitrov had taken the lead by winning the first two sets (6-3, 7-5) and was tied 2-2 in the third when he began to experience pain while serving.
In the moment of injury, Dimitrov was heard saying “my pec” and quickly reached for the area in discomfort. After a brief assessment from trainers at the sidelines, he was in tears before leaving the court for further evaluation. He returned shortly after, shaking his head, indicating he could not continue.
This incident marked the fifth consecutive Grand Slam where Dimitrov was forced to retire. Sinner expressed his sorrow in a post-match interview, praising Dimitrov as an incredible player while acknowledging the tough luck he has faced in recent years.
Sinner, who also sustained an elbow injury during the match, plans to undergo an MRI to determine the severity. He reflected on Dimitrov’s skill and dedication to the sport, wishing him a quick recovery.
Following this emotional exit, Dimitrov received a warm farewell from the crowd as Sinner assisted him with his bag back to the locker room. Sinner progressed to the quarterfinals, aiming for his first Wimbledon title after a recent heartbreak in the French Open final.
