Manor High School’s Legacy
LAS VEGAS — Manor High School in Austin, Texas, boasts a trophy case dominated by Jamal Shead’s achievements.
Journey to Success
It’s true—Shead, the second-year point guard for the Toronto Raptors, led his high school to its inaugural state tournament as a junior and its first district title as a senior before embarking on his successful career at the University of Houston.
Focus on Winning
“All the trophies we have were won during my time there,” Shead mentioned after completing their initial practice ahead of the Las Vegas Summer League, which begins Friday against the Chicago Bulls. “Nothing happened before or after my time.” He’s eager to secure another trophy—the one awarded for the NBA’s summer competition, where development rosters from all 30 teams compete each July.
Raptors’ Summer League Strategy
The Summer League primarily features public scrimmages aimed at helping emerging NBA players gain experience. However, the Raptors have invested more than usual in this stage, fielding a team comprised mainly of young players who previously achieved success in the NBA last season.
Building Chemistry and Experience
Instead of arriving in Vegas to establish their team dynamics, the Raptors’ players have been training since April, with workouts in Toronto and a significant four-day training camp in Austin. Led by Shead’s organization, these sessions aimed to cultivate a cohesive and effective bench for the upcoming season.
Aiming for Higher Expectations
While the Raptors are focused on showing growth, having a roster with returning players carries a risk; underwhelming performances could lead to scrutiny. “We want those expectations,” Shead asserted. “We aim to be the team everyone anticipates us to be.”
The Balance of Work and Fun
Shead’s Austin training camp also included social activities like barbecues, a boat cruise, and outings. However, serious workouts were held for ten players, led by the Raptors’ coaching staff. The goal is to build upon the chemistry established last season, as the Raptors prepare to compete in a highly competitive Eastern Conference.
