Amanda Anisimova Makes Grand Slam Final Debut at Wimbledon
CENTRE COURT, THE ALL ENGLAND CLUB — Amanda Anisimova has officially arrived on the big stage.
After a challenging period following the unexpected passing of her father and coach at 17, Anisimova stunned world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the punishing heat of Centre Court. This victory marks Anisimova’s first appearance in a Grand Slam final at Wimbledon and makes her the first American finalist there since Serena Williams in 2019.
Both players showcased power and determination, but Anisimova maintained her composure during crucial moments, preventing Sabalenka from achieving a major final that has eluded her. Anisimova found her rhythm precisely when Sabalenka appeared to stage a comeback, a familiar theme throughout the tournament.
Post-match, Anisimova reflected, “I knew I had to really go for it. Her level kept rising as the match went on, so I realized I couldn’t win just because of her mistakes.” For Sabalenka, this loss signifies yet another setback against an American competitor in a high-stakes Grand Slam setting. Despite reaching the semifinals or better in 11 out of her last 12 majors, her performance in clutch situations is a growing concern.
Sabalenka, who has lost in the latter stages of three Grand Slam tournaments since reclaiming the No. 1 spot in 2023, acknowledged her struggles in high-pressure moments. “At times I forgot I was ranked at the top and could be more aggressive,” she admitted, reflecting on her performance. However, she also commended Anisimova for being the more daring player.
Anisimova’s journey over the past year has been remarkable. After facing injuries and burnout, she struggled to qualify for Wimbledon last year but has since made significant strides. With the help of physiotherapist Shadi Soleymani, Anisimova regained her health, culminating in her impressive victory at Wimbledon this week.
With a thrilling final against Iga Świątek on the horizon, Anisimova feels prepared for the moment. “I remind myself to enjoy every moment and focus on the present,” she shared, underscoring the importance of mental composure as she steps onto the Grand Slam stage.
