McCullar’s Summer League Experience
LAS VEGAS — Kevin McCullar Jr. is experiencing his first summer league, which feels like the true start of his NBA journey.
While he was drafted in 2024 and played four games with the Knicks last season, a knee injury hindered his rookie year.
Due to this injury, McCullar missed training camp, the summer league games, and various official team events.
“This is really my real rookie season,” McCullar expressed after scoring 30 points in a 94-81 loss to the Celtics. “Last year was just a taste for me. I missed the game for so long, so now it truly feels like my rookie year.”
In the summer league on Sunday, McCullar showcased his talent despite a challenging game for the Knicks, leading the team in scoring. He played aggressively for 28 minutes, shooting 10-for-15, but his tenacity resulted in eight fouls and six turnovers.
“Kevin was solid,” commented Knicks summer league coach Jordan Brink. “He needs to improve ball security; it’s part of his growth as a primary ball handler. His gritty playing style, especially after the head injuries he sustained, shows his dedication.”
McCullar is somewhat of an enigma for the Knicks, having been projected as a first-round pick before his injury forced him down the draft board. Despite being sidelined for much of his rookie season, he is now back on the court and aiming for a roster spot, as the Knicks have openings for players.
Although he is 24 years old and has played at a high level in college, McCullar’s shooting accuracy, particularly from three-point range, needs to improve. Despite scoring efficiently during the Celtics game, he struggled with his long-range shooting.
Injury Updates
Injury concerns emerged for the Knicks on Sunday, as Pacôme Dadiet, their first-round pick in 2024, left the game due to left foot soreness, finishing with seven points. Additionally, James Nnaji, the No. 31 pick in 2023, was sidelined earlier in the game with lower back tightness.
