EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Glenn Phillips is not just a prominent cricketer; he’s also a certified pilot. During an informal chat with Cricbuzz, he was discovered using a flight simulator in his hotel room. In this engaging conversation, he discusses his recovery from a severe injury, his love for Test cricket, his notable performance in the historic Test series win in India, and his stint with Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket.
Can you tell us about your family background?
Both of my parents were athletes—my mother played hockey at a high level in South Africa, and my father was involved in various sports, including provincial hockey. My grandfather was also a professional football player, fostering an athletic lineage in the family. He often cited Jonty Rhodes as a fielding standard for me and my brother.
Do you believe there’s room for improvement in your athleticism?
I feel like I’ve reached my physical peak. I don’t think I can run faster or jump higher, and as I age, maintaining my agility to prevent injuries is crucial. Pushing myself often leads to injuries, but I aim to manage that and continue performing at my best.
How significant was your recovery from the injury sustained while playing for Gujarat Titans?
I suffered a significant adductor injury but fortunately didn’t require surgery, allowing me to recover more quickly. I approach rehab independently, often pushing myself to test the pain threshold, aiming for a faster recovery. The slow process ultimately saw me return three weeks earlier than expected.
What has your experience been like with Washington Freedom?
The management at Washington Freedom is exceptional. They prioritize players’ mental well-being, organizing activities and ensuring families feel welcomed. This supportive environment fosters better on-field performance, as appreciating family dynamics significantly contributes to a player’s comfort and success.
