Military Strikes in Southern Syria
Israel’s military has announced it targeted tanks in southern Syria, where government forces have been in conflict with Bedouin tribes and Druze militias. This marks a significant escalation amid Syria’s ongoing instability following over a decade of civil war.
Casualties from Clashes
Recent fighting has resulted in numerous fatalities in Sweida province, with local militias and clans engaged in hostilities. Syrian government security forces, dispatched to restore order on Monday, also engaged with armed groups in the area.
Death Toll and Injuries
The Syrian interior ministry reports that over 30 individuals have been killed and nearly 100 injured. Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, indicated at least 99 deaths, including two children, two women, and 14 security personnel.
Israel’s Response
Amid the escalating violence, Israel stated it struck “several tanks” in the vicinity as a warning to the Syrian government, reflecting its past interventions which were largely in supposed defense of the Druze community.
Initial Causes of Conflict
According to reports, the clashes began with a kidnapping of a Druze vegetable vendor by members of a Bedouin tribe. This led to reciprocal attacks and further escalated tensions, with government forces allegedly participating alongside the Bedouins.
Government Statements
Interior ministry spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba noted that the clashes are not sectarian but rather stem from conflicts with criminal elements. He emphasized that the Syrian government considers the Druze community a partner in national unity efforts.
International Concerns and Calls for Calm
UN deputy special envoy Najat Rochdi expressed serious concern over the violence and urged for immediate protective measures for civilians. She highlighted the necessity for inclusive dialogue to facilitate a credible political transition in Syria.
