Continuity and Growth
Despite the passage of time, some things remain the same.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who once tirelessly practiced under the summer sun and outperformed his peers, is still that dedicated kid. Now, however, he has significantly grown in size, strength, and speed, and he’s the one lifting his father, Jeremiah Trotter Sr., a Hall of Famer for the Eagles, instead of the other way around.
Rookie Season Accomplishments
The Eagles’ 2024 fifth-round pick from Clemson, Trotter Jr. enjoyed a remarkable rookie season, recording 25 tackles, including nine solo tackles, across all 17 regular-season games, starting one and contributing notably on special teams during his Super Bowl appearance. He has already outperformed his father’s rookie stats—Trotter Sr. played eight games and made three tackles in his first season back in 1998.
Second-Year Prospects
However, both players may share similar experiences in their second year in the NFL. Trotter Sr. earned a starting position at middle linebacker in 1999 under new head coach Andy Reid, leading to a successful career including four Pro Bowl selections. Based on the current team dynamics, Trotter Jr. is poised to seize his chance to start in his second year.
Injury Update and Depth Chart Changes
Following a severe injury to Nakobe Dean during the Eagles’ playoff win, which required surgery and a long recovery period, Trotter Jr., 22, assumes a crucial role as the starting MIKE linebacker. The Eagles had drafted Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell, but Trotter Jr. is set to step up, potentially sharing defensive play-calling duties with All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun.
Coaching Support and Personal Growth
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and the coaching staff appreciate Trotter Jr.’s work ethic and eagerness to learn. Trotter Jr. himself expressed readiness to take on any role the team needs. He feels stronger at 225-230 pounds and has dedicated his offseason to studying film and understanding the defensive system.
Defense Mindset and Preparations
Trotter Jr. has reported feeling more comfortable within the defense. By the end of last season, he found himself playing more instinctively rather than overthinking. He acknowledges the significant role Fangio plays in maximizing player performance through tactical insight.
Aspirations and Family Legacy
As he aims for a Super Bowl victory and potentially another ring, Trotter Jr. is also dreamily contemplating the future alongside his brother, Josiah Trotter, who is set to continue his collegiate football journey. The two playing together again would be a dream come true, according to Jeremiah Jr.
