LITTLE HAITI — A Modern-Day Advocate
Pat Russo, the director of NYC Cops & Kids Boxing, has deep respect for Mother Cabrini, having grown up in the St. Frances Cabrini Parish. He likens her mission of caring for immigrants and orphans to that of Nisa Rodriguez, a boxer who has overcome many challenges and is now a middleweight contender ranked third in the world by the World Boxing Association.
Community Role Model
Rodriguez serves as an NYPD officer focused on community resource initiatives at the Flatbush Gardens housing complex, which hosts one of the four NYC Cops & Kids gyms. Russo admires her efforts in mentoring local youth to stay clear of crime, stating, “She’s the sheriff of this little community at Flatbush Gardens.”
Life Challenges and Triumphs
Born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, Rodriguez faced adversity from a young age, including her parents’ separation and growing up in a tumultuous neighborhood. At 16, she left school and became a mother but later turned to boxing, which helped her channel her anger and frustrations.
Progressing in Boxing and Education
Despite the closure of her first gym, Rodriguez found a new family at NYC Cops & Kids Boxing, commuting regularly for training. Alongside her boxing career, she achieved her GED and eventually worked as a physical education teacher, although two student deaths from gun violence prompted her to pursue a role in law enforcement.
Defining Moments
After a pulmonary embolism cut short her Olympic ambitions in boxing, Rodriguez, encouraged by Russo, joined the police academy. She has now served as an officer for nearly four years, working closely with the community, especially after being assigned to Flatbush Gardens following a community resource officer’s vacancy.
Nurturing Young Talent
Rodriguez is not only an accomplished athlete but also a dedicated mentor, guiding at-risk youth in their personal and athletic pursuits. By encouraging discipline and respect, she fosters a positive environment in the boxing program at Flatbush Gardens. Shamar Jerrick, a young boxer, acknowledges her contributions, stating, “Nisa always looks out.”
A Vision for the Future
Expressing her commitment to making a difference, Rodriguez believes that her role is divinely inspired. She aims to provide the guidance that she felt was essential during her own youth, hoping that one day, the children she mentors will pay it forward. “One day, these kids will pay it forward,” she asserts.
