Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have set themselves apart in the ATP Tour since the start of 2024.
As the top two players in the world, Sinner and Alcaraz have showcased their dominance by claiming the last seven Grand Slam titles between them over the past 18 months.
Their supremacy is further highlighted by their appearances in the last two major finals, where Alcaraz triumphed over Sinner in the French Open final, followed by Sinner’s victory against Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.
While their dominance continues on the ATP Tour, the question arises: who stands out similarly in women’s tennis?
Andrea Petkovic Identifies Swiatek and Sabalenka as the ‘Sinner and Alcaraz’ of the WTA Tour
During an episode of ‘Becker Petkovic’, former French Open semifinalist Andrea Petkovic shared her opinion on the top players in women’s tennis.
“For me, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are the best players in the world,” she remarked. “However, they lack the same consistency at Grand Slams as Sinner and Alcaraz.”
Petkovic acknowledged that other players, like [Coco] Gauff and [Jessica] Pegula, can occasionally defeat them, which is less common in men’s tennis. Yet, she believes that when at their peak, Swiatek and Sabalenka clearly outshine their competition.
Andrea Petkovic Observes Swiatek’s Resemblance to Steffi Graf
Petkovic feels that Iga Swiatek evokes memories of the legendary Steffi Graf, particularly regarding mental toughness and intensity during her best performances.
“Iga exhibits a point-by-point mentality reminiscent of Graf,” she noted, emphasizing that when Swiatek gains momentum, she becomes extremely challenging to defeat.
In discussions with her co-host Boris Becker, they reflected on the rare ability of both Swiatek and Graf to play flawless tennis in critical moments, particularly during Grand Slam finals.
As the North American hard-court season approaches, all eyes will be on Swiatek, who is set to compete in the Canadian Open starting Monday, July 28.
