Kansas Basketball Updates

Kansas head coach Bill Self discussed the Jayhawks’ seeding at a press conference after the NCAA Tournament selection show on March 16, 2025. They will compete against Arkansas in the first round in Providence, Rhode Island.
Following the addition of notable players such as guard Kohl Rosario and center Paul Mbiya, Coach Self feels optimistic about his roster. He noted, “Historically, we’ve been strong in the spring, but this year it took a bit longer to solidify the team.”
Despite the successful acquisition of Rosario and Mbiya in late June, Self mentioned he is still open to bringing in another player, preferably one with experience who can effectively manage the point guard position. “We’re actively looking to add someone for depth and as a precaution, should any injuries occur,” he stated.
This year, under the new House v. NCAA settlement, the Kansas roster is limited to 14 players, all of whom may be on scholarship. The current lineup includes 12 returning players alongside recent signings. They also have three walk-ons, exempt from roster limits as Designated Student-Athletes.
The potential extra ball handler would provide more options at point guard, especially as Elmarko Jackson is recovering from a torn patellar tendon. While Self noted Jackson’s physical recovery, he mentioned that Jackson still needs time to regain his on-court timing.
Self acknowledged that the roster construction this year might not align with the trend of targeting the most highly-rated recruits. “Our focus was on building a team that matches our style of play, which will ultimately enhance our chances of winning,” he explained. While not a perfect roster, Self believes they have improved in size, depth, shooting, and athleticism.
