The NBA Summer League is essentially a basketball event, but far more than just games occur. While basketball is played on the court, there are also many conversations happening in quieter areas of the arenas, hotels, and concourses.
Las Vegas has become a central hub for the entire NBA community. With the offseason frenzy winding down, the atmosphere is more relaxed, and NBA personnel are open to discussing their activities, aspirations for players, and their teams. In exchange for anonymity, you can gain valuable insights. Most information has an optimistic vibe, which is typical of summer in the NBA!
As I’ve done every year upon returning from Las Vegas, I plan to share my notes. I will specify whether each comment originated from a front office executive, a coach, or a scout.

NBA Expansion
-
“It’s definitely on the horizon. The timing is uncertain, but I think we’re still a minimum of three years away from the roster-building process,” remarked a Western Conference front office executive.
-
“Expansion is overdue. Even with the added two-way contract spots, roster spots are still a challenge. Adding 36 roster spaces with two new teams would be significant,” stated a long-term agent.
-
“It’s common knowledge that expansion is likely. I suspect Las Vegas and Seattle will be the locations, but I’m not sure how conference realignment will happen,” mentioned an Eastern Conference GM.
NBA Draft Insights
-
“We absolutely love the two-day draft format. The second round is much more organized, allowing more time for trade discussions,” said an Eastern Conference GM.
-
“The chaos of the draft helped our calm draft room. The two-day format reduces the chance to capitalize on frantic decision-making,” explained an Eastern Conference scout.
-
“The trend of college players remaining in school is likely to persist until we adjust our pay scales,” noted an Eastern Conference GM. “With some college athletes earning up to $5 million a year, staying in school makes sense!”
Team Developments
-
“Cooper Flagg has exceeded our expectations. His drive to prove himself, especially after an initial poor performance, truly impresses us,” shared a Mavericks front office executive.
-
“The pressure is off younger players with new signings. Our lineup is deeper, allowing them to grow without being overwhelmed,” mentioned a Nuggets front office executive.
Looking Ahead
-
“Our offseason has been brisk! After recognizing our needs post-playoffs, we are focused on depth and performance this coming season,” noted a Rockets front office executive.
-
“We anticipate great contributions from our young core. With guys like Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith, we’re ready to compete effectively,” expressed a Rockets coach.
Season Preparedness
-
“While managing cap pressures, we aim for responsible roster building that doesn’t jeopardize our future,” said a Warriors front office executive.
-
“We’re excited about the new additions this season. They complement our existing talent effectively,” commented a Lakers front office executive.
