Upcoming Trade Deadline and Playoff Races
With the July 31 trade deadline quickly approaching, teams are deeply engaged in the pennant race.
Playoff Outlook
As every team has passed the 100-game mark, we’re starting to get a clearer picture of the playoff contenders, though much is still up for grabs in the upcoming months.
Current Standings
Which teams have secured spots? Which teams are still in contention? Here’s how things would look if the postseason started today.
Byes: Blue Jays (1) and Astros (2)
Wild Card Matchups
Red Sox (6) at Tigers (3)
Mariners (5) at Yankees (4)
Just missed: Rangers (1/2 game out of WC spot), Rays (1 1/2 games)
Blue Jays’ Impressive Performance
As of July 26, the Blue Jays boast the best record in baseball–the latest they have led in a season since 1992, when they clinched their first World Series title. Their performance amidst the inherent unpredictability of baseball is impressive.
The Tigers, having lost 11 of their last 12 games, have seen their hold on the top spot in the American League slip. They’re now in a tight race with the Astros and Blue Jays, as only 2.5 games separate these three teams, indicating that the competition is far from decided.
Wild Card Developments
The AL Wild Card race is also heating up. The Yankees currently lead the top Wild Card spot, while the situation for the Mariners and Red Sox remains uncertain, with only two games separating them, the Rangers, and the Rays.
N.L. Playoff Picture
In contrast to the AL, the playoff picture in the National League is less predictable. The Brewers and Dodgers are well-positioned, but numerous teams, separated by just two games, are vying for playoff spots, making for a thrilling end to the season.
Milwaukee’s resurgence, boasting a 30-14 record since June, showcases their shot at solidifying a playoff position. Meanwhile, the Padres hold the final Wild Card spot but face stiff competition from the Giants and Reds, who are just a game back.
Teams Missing the Playoffs
It’s surprising to see the Braves and Orioles struggle this season despite high expectations. Preseason optimism surrounded these teams, especially the Braves. The Guardians and Royals, meanwhile, have yet to find their rhythm this season.
Conversely, while teams like the Cubs and Mariners looked promising before the season, the Blue Jays have emerged as a major surprise, not just contending for the playoffs but leading the league in wins.
