The Seattle Seahawks kicked off Week 2 of training camp on Monday with their first practice in pads. The introduction of pads typically heightens the intensity and physicality of practices, which often results in some skirmishes by the week’s end. While there was no notable roughhousing this time, Coach Mike Macdonald shared some disappointing news.
Here’s a recap of Day 5!
News
Kenny McIntosh’s season is over; Seahawks sign DK Kaufman
As anticipated, the Seahawks placed running back Kenny McIntosh on injured reserve after Coach Macdonald confirmed he had torn his ACL during Saturday’s practice. He is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, marking an unfortunate end to his season before it even started.
In his place, NC State rookie DK Kaufman has been signed, transitioning from defensive back to running back. He will also contribute on special teams as a kick returner.
Seahawks host five players for tryouts
According to the NFL transaction wire, the Seahawks welcomed five players for tryouts.
- Jesse Luketa, LB, Penn State
- Travis Martin, DB, Langston
- Efe Obada, DE, International Player Pathway
- Benny Sapp, DB, Northern Iowa
- Ridge Texada, DB, North Texas
Both Martin and Texada are undrafted rookie defensive backs, while Luketa has four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Sapp has previously played for the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons, and Obada made history as the first player from the International Player Pathway program to be included on a 53-man roster. His remarkable journey to the NFL is as inspiring as it is poignant.
Notes and Quotes
The rotation continues at center and right guard
After several days of media coverage, former Field Gulls podcast host Dan Viens attended Monday’s practice with fans at VMAC. Coach Macdonald has indicated ongoing rotation at center and right guard, but on Monday, Jalen Sundell predominantly took snaps over Christian Haynes and Anthony Bradford.

Jalen Milroe intercepted by familiar rival
A rookie-on-rookie highlight occurred at camp when third-round pick Jalen Milroe was picked off by second-round pick Nick Emmanwori, a rivalry stemming from their time at Alabama and South Carolina. This interception might be the first pick-six for any Seahawks QB during camp, showcasing a rookie stepping up.

Also, Riq Woolen made an interception off Sam Darnold, which is favorable news since Woolen had shown some limping earlier in practice.
Drake Thomas steps up in Ernest Jones IV’s absence
Drake Thomas, who was claimed off waivers two seasons ago after a surprising cut by the Las Vegas Raiders, took on first-team reps in place of Ernest Jones IV, who was out for personal reasons.
With Jones absent, Thomas seized the opportunity, and there was buzz about RB George Holani potentially making the 53-man roster this season.

Mike Macdonald seeks improvement from his offense
Despite the ongoing excitement of camp, not every aspect is perfect. After practice, Coach Macdonald shared some critical observations regarding the offense, especially concerning the running game.
“We started practice well today, which is a positive,” Macdonald noted. “However, the offense needs to respond because they didn’t get off to a quick start today.”
When asked about the contributions of Abe Lucas and Robbie Ouzts to the run game, Macdonald candidly said, “I need to review the tape, but as of now, no. There is no criticism of them, but we didn’t execute the running game well today, so we need to improve.”
Macdonald didn’t specify what he wanted to see from the running game, but he indicated that adjustments are necessary for the team’s growth.
