Tyrese Proctor Supports NRL Expansion in the US
Australia’s newest NBA player, Tyrese Proctor, has voiced his support for the NRL’s efforts to expand into the United States, expressing optimism that it won’t be long before his teammates with the Cleveland Cavaliers become rugby league enthusiasts.
A Passionate Sharks Fan
Proctor, who grew up a devoted supporter of the Cronulla Sharks, relocated to America to play for Duke University, a college basketball powerhouse. The 21-year-old was drafted by the Cavaliers last month, aiming to follow in the footsteps of fellow Australians like Josh Giddey and Dante Exum.
Familiarity with Rugby League
While in Las Vegas for the NRL season launch earlier this year, Proctor observed that American sports fans appreciate the physicality and skills inherent in rugby league. Despite not being able to watch every Sharks game, he makes a point of tuning into the annual State of Origin matches.
Growing the Game in America
Proctor emphasized his childhood experiences attending Sharks games, thanks to his uncle’s season tickets. He believes that if the NRL continues to grow and goes international, fans in America will begin to take notice. “If the game keeps growing, fans are going to travel, so it definitely can flourish in the States,” he noted.
Upcoming Challenges
Proctor has returned briefly to Australia before heading back to the US to prepare for his rookie season. He recently attended a Sharks training session, interacting with the team’s stars, and will be present for their match against North Queensland.
Support from Fellow Players
Nicho Hynes, a key player for Cronulla, remarked that sporting icons in the US have a unique ability to connect with fans and feel confident Proctor will help elevate rugby league in Cleveland and elsewhere. Hynes noted that exposure of the Sharks brand is gradually increasing, as evidenced by a young NFL player being spotted wearing a Sharks hat.
Looking Ahead
As Cronulla prepares for their upcoming match, Hynes mentioned that they are focused on securing a top-four position. While they have won three consecutive matches, the Sharks are determined to improve their offensive performance. Hynes stated, “We set our goal at the beginning of the season to strive for the top four, and I believe we can achieve that, but our focus is on the Cowboys this weekend.”
