Tennis Best Bets and Predictions for Friday, August 1st:
This week, the ATP and WTA Tours are in Canada for the 2025 National Bank Open presented by Rogers. The men’s event is taking place in Toronto as part of the Masters 1000 series, while the women’s tournament is being held in Montreal at the same level. Although top players like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Aryna Sabalenka have chosen to sit this one out to prepare for Cincinnati, there are still plenty of strong competitors in action. Be sure to check back at VSiN, where I’ll be providing daily insights as often as possible, including updates for Friday, August 1st.
Don’t forget to visit the picks page frequently for additional bets. I sometimes include extra selections for smaller tournaments and Challenger events there as well. It’s also where you’ll find picks from Gill Alexander, who excels in analyzing tennis on A Numbers Game. You can watch Gill’s tennis analysis from Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to noon ET. 2025 Record: 946-922-1 (+42.94 units)
Belinda Bencic vs. Karolina Muchova
It’s tough to argue that Muchova is finding her form, as she hasn’t won consecutive matches since Indian Wells. However, she showed improvement with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Antonia Ruzic in her last match, posting a 63.9% success rate on first serves—her best percentage since March. Muchova also seemed more confident in her two-handed backhand, a promising development given her earlier struggles with injuries that limited her to a one-handed slice.
If Muchova can tap into her full potential, backing her as a substantial underdog against Bencic seems reasonable. Although I admire Bencic’s skills, her recent performances have been disappointing. She was demolished 6-2, 6-0 by Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon semifinals and struggled against Eugenie Bouchard, a player who is transitioning to pickleball. I believe Muchova’s best level matches Bencic’s, and if she’s in form, she has a strong chance to win this match.
Bet: Muchova ML (+138)
Jiri Lehecka vs. Arthur Fils
This match has me convinced that the superior player is ready to make a comeback. Fils recently returned from a lengthy injury hiatus due to a stress fracture in his back but put in a solid performance, defeating Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 64. The statistics from TennisViz and Tennis Data Innovations favor Fils significantly: he holds better scores in shot quality for both forehand and backhand, alongside being a stronger returner. Lehecka only outperforms him in serving metrics, which can be powerful on hard courts.
While Lehecka’s serve could potentially win him a set, I have confidence in Fils’ all-around game and explosive shot-making abilities to prevail in the match.
Bet: Fils ML (+130)
Fabian Marozsan vs. Flavio Cobolli
Cobolli recently secured a hard-fought win over Alexis Galarneau, but Galarneau mainly competes at the Challenger level, making it hard to gauge Cobolli’s form. After a strong serving display that led him to the Wimbledon quarterfinals, Cobolli has struggled while getting just 54.9% of his first serves in over his last three matches. His baseline game is usually explosive, but his serving consistency is an issue. The question remains whether he can regain his earlier momentum or if he’s returning to lower form.
On the other hand, Marozsan has been playing well, recording straight-set victories over both Hugo Dellien and Felix Auger Aliassime, the latter being particularly impressive given the Canadian’s home-court advantage. This match presents a challenging scenario for Cobolli during a rough patch, underscored by dwindling odds despite increased bets on him.
Bet: Marozsan ML (-105)
