Austin, Texas — Sean Miller, the new head coach of the Texas Longhorns basketball team, is experiencing his fourth transition in over 20 years as a coach. This shift comes during a time when the college sports environment has transformed significantly since his return to the Xavier Musketeers three years ago.
The introduction of revenue sharing and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights has complicated roster management for coaches. Miller expressed to local media that his four months at Texas have felt longer due to the complexities of offseason workouts.
Miller noted, “In the past, taking over a new program focused primarily on forming a staff and familiarizing yourself with the roster and university. Now, building the roster and making decisions happen quickly in your first weeks. A lot has occurred for us in a short time.”
After Miller’s arrival, three players from Texas entered the NCAA transfer portal. However, he successfully retained the team’s lone 2025 recruit, John Clark, and kept senior guards Jordan Pope and Tramon Mark, while also adding Dailyn Swain, a former Xavier forward, just eight days into his tenure.
With the roster solidifying, Miller is eager for the arrivals of Lewis Obiorah and Declan Duru, along with the returns of Mark and senior center Lassina Traore from injuries. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s current state, appreciating the experienced players they have.
Miller highlighted the importance of player experience, mentioning Mark’s impressive history as a scorer and the achievements of other transfers. Senior guard Chendall Weaver and junior Simeon Wilcher are also expected to contribute significantly to the team’s shooting capabilities this season.
Miller aims for a fast-paced offense while integrating a more dynamic halfcourt strategy involving active player and ball movement. He believes that an engaged and unselfish approach will make Texas a formidable team, enhancing their chances of defeating tough opponents.
