Sparks Secure Eight Wins in Their Last Nine Matches
Los Angeles, CA (August 7, 2025) – The Connecticut Sun (5-24) were defeated by the Los Angeles Sparks (14-15) at Crypto.com Arena. This loss marks the Sun’s third consecutive defeat against the Sparks in the 2025 season, concluding their matchups for the year.
Marina Mabrey and Tina Charles led the Sun with 19 points and seven rebounds each. Bria Hartley followed closely with 16 points and three assists, both Mabrey and Hartley registering an impressive 50% from beyond the arc. Leila Lacan also contributed to the scoring with 10 points, a career-high seven assists, and three steals.
The game opened with both teams trading baskets, with the Sparks holding a slight four-point advantage. A layup from Leila Lacan narrowed the gap to 12-10, before Bria Hartley’s three-pointer from Mabrey put the Sun ahead 13-12. The Sparks quickly retaliated to regain the lead, but a subsequent three-pointer from Hartley made it 16-14 in favor of the Sun. After a flurry of back-and-forth scoring, a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Saniya Rivers capped the first quarter at 29-27 for the Sun.
In the second quarter, the Sun surged ahead with a 9-1 run led by Tina Charles and Saniya Rivers, pushing the score to 40-30. A three-pointer from the Sparks halted their momentum, but Charles quickly responded to maintain a lead. Following a timeout, the Sparks went on an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead, but Hartley’s three-pointer at the end of the half gave the Sun a season-high 51 points at halftime.
The second half began with the Sun scoring eight unanswered points, taking a 59-51 lead. However, the Sparks countered with a 9-0 run. The teams continued to trade leads until the Sparks managed to extend their lead in the fourth quarter. Marina Mabrey attempted to push the Sun back into contention with six points off three-pointers, but the Sparks held their ground, securing the win with a final score of 102-91.
In terms of shooting statistics, the Sun finished with 41.2% (33/80) from the field, while the Sparks shot an impressive 56.5% (35/62). From three-point range, the Sun recorded 44.8% (13/29) and the Sparks 44% (11/25). The Sun also dominated in offensive rebounds and fast breaks, outscoring the Sparks 25 to 15 and 11 to 4 respectively.
