Injury Concerns in the Cowboys’ Backfield
OXNARD, Calif. — As the Cowboys approach training camp, one of the most pressing issues remains unresolved: the running back position. The situation has worsened as rookie Jaydon Blue is now dealing with an injury.
Emerging Talent Hindered by Injury
Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round rookie known for his explosive playmaking, had recently been generating excitement in training camp. Unfortunately, a foot/ankle bruise sustained during a padded practice on Thursday is likely to keep him out of the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on August 9.
Growing List of Injuries
This injury adds to the challenges facing the running back group. Veteran Miles Sanders is still sidelined with a knee issue, and although Deuce Vaughn, who missed several practices with a hamstring problem, returned on Thursday, he still needs clearance to participate on Saturday.
Limited Options for the Cowboys
If Vaughn is not ready, the available running backs will be JaVonte Williams and rookie Phil Mafah, with fullback Hunter Luepke as an additional option. Williams, now healthy, is expected to get significant playing time at the start of the regular season, but his participation in the preseason is uncertain.
Potential New Signings
The Cowboys may soon look to sign a running back as options become limited. Here are some candidates:
Notable Candidates
Malik Davis, 26: A familiar name for the Cowboys, Davis was an undrafted free agent from Florida who showed promise in his rookie season. Recently released, he could easily reintegrate into the team as he already knows the system. **(UPDATE: Davis signed with the Cowboys Friday and practiced with the team.)**
D’Onta Foreman, 29: A seasoned NFL player with experience on multiple teams, Foreman had his best season in 2022, rushing for 914 yards. He has also been a contributor for the Browns and could bring valuable experience to the Cowboys.
Zack Moss, 27: Moss, a former third-round pick, had a standout year in 2023 but faced challenges in 2024 with a broken neck. His future in football is uncertain but could be an intriguing option.
Jamaal Williams, 30: An intriguing choice for the Cowboys, Williams was the NFL’s rushing touchdowns leader in 2022. Although his production has declined since then, he may still serve as an effective backup.
Gus Edwards, 30: Familiar to Cowboys fans for his performance against them in 2020, Edwards has experience with injuries but has been a steady performer when healthy. He is currently a free agent.
