Michail Antonio has shared with talkSPORT that he aims to prove himself at his new club following recovery from a life-threatening car accident.
The 35-year-old is currently without a contract after being released by West Ham eight months after a serious car crash in December.
During his decade-long tenure at the club, Antonio made 323 appearances and netted 83 goals, becoming their top Premier League scorer. His last game for the Hammers was marred by a severe injury, having broke his leg in four places when he crashed his £260,000 Ferrari.
Antonio made his return to professional football in June, playing for Jamaica in the Gold Cup and later featuring for West Ham’s U21 team. He, currently a pundit for TNT Sports at the Community Shield, assured fans that his playing career is far from over.
Future Aspirations
In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook at Wembley, when asked if his new role meant he had hung up his boots, Antonio stated, “No, definitely not. I’m in talks with clubs to find the best offer possible.” He remained vague about the clubs involved, mentioning he was in discussions both domestically and internationally.
Antonio expressed a desire to join a club that offers him the greatest chance to compete in the World Cup, aiming for a spot with Jamaica, who last appeared in the finals in 1998. The Jamaican national team has recently appointed Steve McClaren as manager, aiming for qualification for the tournament in the U.S. next summer.
Overcoming Adversity
Reflecting on the recovery challenges, Antonio stated, “It was tough, as it was initially a 12-month injury, but I managed to overcome it in five and a half months. I participated for Jamaica in the summer, even scoring two goals for the U21s.”
Despite the physical strains, Antonio noted the mental hurdles he had to clear during recovery. He received therapy to aid his comeback but is now feeling “very good” and content with his current situation. He looks forward to showcasing his skills on the pitch again once he finds a new club.
Support for His Successor
In a show of support for West Ham’s new signing, Callum Wilson, Antonio called on fans to back his friend. After Wilson signed a one-year deal with West Ham, fans expressed skepticism about his arrival due to his injury history and age. Antonio, however, defended Wilson’s talent and assured fans of his commitment to the club.
