Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have maintained their dominance in 2025, just as they did in 2024.
Since the start of the 2024 season, the only Grand Slam titles have been claimed by Sinner and Alcaraz.
The duo has split the last seven majors, with Sinner taking four titles (2024 Australian Open, 2024 US Open, 2025 Australian Open, 2025 Wimbledon) and Alcaraz winning three (2024 French Open, 2024 Wimbledon, 2025 French Open).
In 2025, Sinner and Alcaraz have elevated their rivalry by facing off in the last two major finals. Many anticipate they will meet again in the upcoming US Open final, although a notable coach has pinpointed two players who might challenge them.
Vincenzo Santopadre cites potential challengers for Sinner and Alcaraz
In a recent interview, former coach of Matteo Berrettini, Vincenzo Santopadre, shared his thoughts on the likelihood of Sinner and Alcaraz clashing for a third straight Grand Slam final. He suggested their consistent performance places them ahead of the competition, making their meeting in the final the most expected outcome.
Nevertheless, Santopadre mentioned two players, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, who could pose significant challenges to the frontrunners. He remarked, “There’s always a chance for a small misstep, and both players are not infallible.” He believes Fritz and Shelton could become bothersome opponents given their recent successes.
While Fritz and Shelton have yet to achieve the same level of success as Sinner and Alcaraz at the US Open, both have reached the semifinals. Last year, Fritz had his best showing, finishing as runner-up to Sinner in the final.
As the US Open approaches, fans eagerly await to see if Fritz or Shelton can make a breakthrough. Santopadre, now working with Lorenzo Sonego, will surely be watching intently as the tournament kicks off.
Santopadre’s regrets about Berrettini’s Wimbledon opportunity
Reflecting on his coaching career, Santopadre expressed remorse over not winning Wimbledon with Matteo Berrettini. Despite Berrettini’s success on grass and a Wimbledon final appearance in 2021, his 2022 campaign was cut short by a COVID-19 diagnosis, preventing him from competing.
