DETROIT LAKES — Adapting to nature’s demands is crucial, especially during events like the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament. Due to heavy rainfall the previous night, the second round began with a late shotgun start, resulting in a swift-paced Tuesday afternoon.
Nearly two inches of rainfall struck the Detroit Lakes area on Monday night, causing flooding on the Detroit Country Club course and turning bunkers into miniature splash zones. Consequently, tournament organizers decided to provide Superintendent Zachary Foltz and his team with extra time to prepare the course.
This adjustment delayed the Championship division tee times to 10:30 a.m. and moved the Mid-Am and later Championship tee times to 3 p.m. Despite the rescheduling and faster playing conditions, participants relished the clear blue skies.
Tyler Nelson Secures Second Mid-Am Medalist Title
Tyler Nelson from Oxbow, North Dakota, maintained his top position on the leaderboard, finishing the day at 1-under par. Even with a double bogey on Hole 3 and two bogeys on Holes 5 and 6, his strong back nine, featuring two birdies, allowed him to finish with a 1-over par 72, totaling an even 142 for the qualifying rounds.
Nelson was among only two golfers to score below 75 in both rounds. Second place went to Fargo’s Matt Peterson, finishing with 146 (74, 72). Matt Bekkerus from Rochert, Minnesota, placed third with 148 (73, 75), while Moorhead’s Jeff Bernstrom captured the fourth position with a final score of 149, completing the second round with a solid 72. Jacob Radermacher from Detroit Lakes and Bryan Baird from Henderson, Nevada, tied for fifth at 150.
The runner-up from 2023 and 2024, Jake Witham, withdrew after the first round, and the remaining field was narrowed down to the top 26. Match play is set to commence on Thursday, August 14.
Skarperud and Larson Lead the Championship Division
Some Championship participants were unable to complete their rounds due to the late start, necessitating an early morning return to finish 18 holes, consequently delaying the second round of qualifiers.
2024 medalist, Jake Skarperud from Fargo, and Carver Larson from Alexandria are tied for the lead at 5-under par (66). Rolette, North Dakota native Nick Myhre stands at 4-under par but is still on his 16th hole. Meanwhile, Lawsen Justesen from Detroit Lakes is tied in a group of twelve for the 15th-best score, achieving a 1-under par 70. The 2023 and 2024 runner-up, Torger Ohe from Edina, finished at 3-over par 74, comfortably above the projected cut line of 7-over par.
