Prime Minister Welcomes Zelensky for Discussions
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Downing Street for private talks.
Their meeting precedes a critical summit set to occur in Alaska, where US President Donald Trump will converse with Russian President Vladimir Putin about finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
Starmer expressed optimism regarding a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and emphasized the need to uphold Ukraine’s territorial integrity and ensure that borders remain unchanged by force.
Support Ahead of the Alaska Summit
This prominent meeting at Number 10 serves as a well-coordinated display of support from the UK, timed just one day before the Alaska summit.
In related news, visiting US Vice-President JD Vance stated that Trump’s mission is to restore peace in Europe.
Last week, Trump suggested there might be “some swapping of territories” which has sparked concerns that Ukraine might have to concede some land to end the ongoing violence. Ukraine insists it will not yield any territory, including Crimea, while Russia aims to retain its hold on that region.
Cooperation for a Lasting Ceasefire
During a virtual meeting with European leaders after the call with Trump, Sir Keir highlighted that any ceasefire must be enduring and would require security guarantees. He mentioned the establishment of a coalition among various countries providing military support to Ukraine as a deterrent against potential Russian violations of a peace agreement.
Starmer noted the coalition’s readiness with “credible” military plans that could be implemented if a ceasefire is reached, and leaders are prepared to increase economic pressure on Russia through sanctions if needed.
Remarks by US Officials
Vance, currently in the UK on a private family trip, also attended the call with Sir Keir and other European leaders. Later, he addressed American troops at RAF Fairford, praising the longstanding alliance between the two nations.
At a press conference following the call with European leaders, Trump indicated there might be a possible meeting between Putin and Zelensky. He planned to utilize his first meeting with Putin to assess the situation, potentially facilitating a subsequent discussion with both Zelensky and Putin.
Zelensky, currently in Berlin meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reiterated that the US is prepared to sustain its support for Ukraine, asserting that Russia is not genuinely seeking peace.
