Bears Show Strong Offense in Preseason Opener
CHICAGO – The Bears kicked off their 2024 preseason on a high note, overcoming last year’s struggles as one of three teams failing to score on their opening offensive possession. Quarterback Caleb Williams led a powerful seven-play, 92-yard drive that ended in a touchdown, marking a key moment for the team’s identity.
“It sets a tone for us as a team,” said Williams, who played in his first preseason game after most starters rested during a prior tie against the Miami Dolphins. He added, “It’s important for how we expect to perform.”
After winning the coin toss, the Bears began with the ball. A hiccup by wide receiver Tyler Scott on the opening kickoff set the Bears back to their own 8-yard line. Williams then orchestrated a nearly four-minute drive, concluding with a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus.
Completing 6 of 10 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, Williams displayed impressive skills across two drives. His performance included first-down completions to tight ends Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet, while also connecting with wide receiver DJ Moore.
Williams’ success in practices leading up to the game was acknowledged by coach Ben Johnson, who noted a recent pattern of positive performances. “He’s really been locked in,” Johnson remarked, highlighting the quarterback’s growth through both good and challenging days during camp.
Williams reflected on his learning process: “I think I’ve grown a lot in the past month. My goal is to keep improving and to take on every challenge that is presented to me,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to mastering the new offense.
Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent took over the offense later in the game, completing 13 of 22 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. The Bears maintained a commanding lead, outgaining the Bills by 348 yards in a decisive 38-0 victory.
