KEY OBSERVATIONS
DeVries was instrumental in Indiana’s significant comebacks during the last two games. He showcased a physical playstyle, drawing fouls and scoring through contact, highlighted by his driving layups that earned him several and-ones. In Puerto Rico, he attempted 15 free throws, securing 12 of them. Defenders struggled to give him space behind the arc, proving he can adapt beyond just being a shooter.
A moment that truly exemplified his effort was when DeVries dove for a loose ball during a rally in the second game, risking injury after recently recovering from shoulder surgery. His hustle led to a vital play that contributed to his team’s momentum.
His rebounding skills stood out, averaging 6.3 boards per game, and he often initiates fast breaks after grabbing a defensive rebound. His aggression on the floor didn’t detract from his playmaking; with an average of 4.0 assists per game, he has demonstrated his ability to facilitate scoring, contributing to strong team dynamics with numerous capable scorers around him.
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
While it’s hard to criticize DeVries, given his past accolades as a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and his prior impressive performance at West Virginia, fans look forward to seeing his full potential this season now that he is healthy.
QUOTABLE MOMENTS
DeVries expressed excitement about his new teammates, sharing, “This group’s pure shooting is definitely among the best I’ve ever been a part of. Everyone on this team can make shots.” He also noted, “It feels great to finally be in shape and lifting again after missing previous offseasons.”
