Status of Jauan Jennings Uncertain
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers are uncertain about wide receiver Jauan Jennings’ availability for Week 1. However, general manager John Lynch made it clear on Wednesday that the team is not interested in trading Jennings.
Injury and Trade Request
Jennings has been sidelined due to a calf injury he sustained during training camp. Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan provided updates regarding his situation during a recent media session. Lynch revealed that Jennings had asked for a trade “some time ago,” but the team plans to keep him.
Contract Situation
This season marks the final year of Jennings’ two-year contract extension signed in 2024, which counts $4.258 million against the salary cap. Jennings reportedly sought a lucrative contract extension or a trade as of mid-July. After participating in the first four training camp practices, he hasn’t practiced since July 27 due to his injury.
Team’s Approach
As the regular-season opener approaches, both Lynch and Shanahan want Jennings back on the field, especially with the first game against the Seattle Seahawks on September 7. Lynch emphasized that while they hope for his return, it is not certain.
Receiver Depth Concerns
The 49ers are facing depth issues at the receiver position, with only two healthy receivers remaining after final roster cuts. In response, San Francisco signed veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling and plans to reinstate Russell Gage Jr. from waivers.
Future Outlook
While Jennings continues to recover, the Niners have also placed wideout Jacob Cowing on injured reserve and re-signed punter Thomas Morstead. Shanahan remains optimistic about getting other key players back in time for the game against Seattle.
