Rheinmetall launches new ammunition manufacturing facility
Rheinmetall, Germany’s leading arms manufacturer, has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility dedicated to artillery ammunition production.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger stated that they aim to gradually increase the production of 155-millimeter rounds, potentially reaching 350,000 rounds per year by 2027.
The factory located in Unterlüß, northern Germany, is set to become the largest in Europe, with plans for similar plants to be established at a comparable pace in NATO territories.
Papperger outlined that these facilities could be pivotal for creating a unified “pan-European defense ecosystem,” during an event that featured participation from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil.
“This factory’s establishment confirms Germany’s capacity to act swiftly when necessary,” said Papperger. The facility represents a total investment of €500 million ($585.35 million).
