Friday’s edition of “First Call” offers a thought-provoking take on Steelers running back Jaylen Warren from offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
Notably, a frequently mentioned wide receiver option for the Steelers has announced retirement. George Pickens made his debut in a Cowboys uniform, while a former Steelers offensive tackle is attempting a comeback following a significant transformation.
Additionally, the Pirates are gearing up for yet another tough challenge.
Analyzing the Situation
Earlier this week, Jaylen Warren secured a two-year contract extension worth $17.5 million with the Steelers, which includes $12 million guaranteed.
On Thursday, when asked if Warren could be considered a “high-volume lead” back, Smith’s answer was ambiguous. Here’s a portion of his response:
“There are very few players who can handle nearly 300 carries a year. Credit goes to (Najee Harris) for being unique in that aspect. We have historically had feature backs, like Derrick Henry in Tennessee. Our running back room has distinct strengths,” he pointed out.
Smith continued, “Jaylen faced injuries last season and wasn’t always at 100%. He possesses a rare skill set, excelling in contact balance and pass protection. We also have Kenneth Gainwell and young options like Kaleb (Johnson). While there are limited carries, if we play longer into the season, there will be plenty to share among the three.”
Did you interpret that as a definitive “Yes”? I certainly didn’t.
When a specific question about one player leads to a discussion about multiple guys, it suggests a clear “No.” Smith appears to share that sentiment, despite Warren’s new contract implying the front office holds higher views of him than that.
Pickens Debuts Quietly
George Pickens’ debut with the Dallas Cowboys was notably subdued.
The former Steelers wide receiver caught three passes for 30 yards on four targets in the NFL’s opening game against the Eagles. However, he did contribute by drawing a significant pass interference penalty early in the match.
Notably, he also received attention for a controversial clothesline penalty. Pickens was traded to Dallas from Pittsburgh on May 7, just days before his first game.
Former Steeler on the Comeback Trail
An ex-Steeler, offensive tackle Zach Banner, is in the spotlight again as he worked out with the Chicago Bears.
Banner hasn’t participated in an NFL game since January 9, 2022, after being released by the Steelers. He played for the Houston Roughnecks in the UFL but is looking for an NFL return after losing 70 pounds.
Cooper’s Retirement Ends Steelers Speculation
For those hoping that Amari Cooper might join the Steelers mid-season, that’s not happening as he has opted for retirement.
Despite signing a one-year contract to return to the Las Vegas Raiders, the 31-year-old receiver decided to retire after a decade-long career, finishing with notable stats.
Facing Tough Competition
Over their disappointing season, the Pirates (64-77) have shown resilience at home, achieving a 42-30 record at PNC Park.
They’ve recently recorded series wins against strong teams, including the Giants and Red Sox, although they faced a setback against the Brewers.
With more matchups on the horizon, the Pirates aim to build on their performance against competitive teams as the season progresses.
