As Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) prepares for the eagerly awaited iPhone 17 launch, industry analyst Daniel Newman has voiced concerns about the company’s reliance on conventional upgrades instead of novel innovations.
Newman, the CEO of Futurum Group, expressed his discontent on Sunday via X (formerly known as Twitter) in anticipation of Apple’s upcoming event on September 9. He remarked, “The next ‘big $AAPL event’ will be to launch a new iPhone 17 Air. I am no longer surprised by Apple’s lack of innovation. But please, you can do better, Apple.”
Upcoming Event Expectations
This criticism comes just before Apple’s highly publicized keynote at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. The event, which will be streamed live on apple.com and the Apple TV app, represents the first major showcase since June’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
At this event, Apple is anticipated to unveil various versions of the iPhone 17, including a new model, the slim iPhone 17 Air, which may succeed the previous iPhone Plus model. There are also reports of new color options and enhanced camera features, with prices starting at $800 for the base model.
Concerns About Market Reception
Despite the excitement that typically surrounds Apple’s product launches, some analysts on Wall Street warn that this year’s event might trigger a “sell-the-news” reaction if the updates are viewed as insufficiently innovative.
Additionally, industry analysts like Gene Munster have suggested that while Apple’s AI innovation might currently be lacking, it could improve as Siri is slated to integrate with Google Gemini in 2026. Meanwhile, Dan Ives of Wedbush has criticized Apple’s AI strategy, labeling it a “disaster” for its overdependence on external partnerships.
