Jordan Clarkson is set to bring immediate scoring ability to the New York Knicks’ bench.
Jordan Clarkson took just two minutes to commit to the New York Knicks during the off-season, a move that thrust him back into national attention following a quieter season with the Utah Jazz.
During a recent live taping of the Roommates Show podcast in Central Park, co-hosted by Knicks players Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, Clarkson shared the story of his quick decision. While at Wimbledon watching a match with his agent Rich Paul, Clarkson was asked where he wanted to go. “I said, ‘I wanna come to New York,’” he recounted, with the entire process taking only two minutes.
Signing with the Knicks at a Veteran Minimum
After negotiating a buyout with the struggling Jazz, Clarkson signed with the Knicks on a veteran minimum contract. Reports indicate he waived $3.6 million in his buyout, which he will recover under his new contract, having been slated to earn $14.3 million this season.
Now age 33, Clarkson is eager to chase a championship, especially after playing just 33 games last season. The allure of Madison Square Garden, often called “The Mecca,” played a significant role in his choice, stating, “The energy in the arena… everybody wakes up wanting to be a part of it.”
Cultural Impact and International Experience
This move is particularly meaningful for Clarkson, who embraces the opportunity to play for a globally recognized franchise with a diverse fan base. As a Filipino-American, he will resonate with the sizeable Filipino community in New York, which exceeds 250,000 individuals.
Reflecting on the atmosphere, Clarkson expressed, “Knowing they’re going to let you have it if you’re playing poorly. But when you’re doing well, it’s all love. I just want to feel that energy.” Last season, he averaged 16.2 points and 3.7 assists for Utah, while also leading the Philippine national team in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, demonstrating his international prowess.
Enhancing the Knicks’ Bench
Clarkson looks forward to adding to the team’s success, stating, “Y’all been doing great things over here. I just want to come in and enhance what y’all got going on.” The Knicks are optimistic that Clarkson can invigorate a bench that was the lowest in scoring last season, helping them aim for greater success in both the Eastern Conference and the NBA championship.
